Cool Hand Luke- PTSD

February 18, 2013

I watched “Cool Hand Luke” on TV this week-end and besides the “I can eat 50 eggs” quote, the one that stands out for me is the Strother Martin’s quote, “What we have here, is a failure to communicate.” It hit me across the face that this is exactly one of the major problems for PTSD sufferers.

As I’ve said, I’m volunteering at the Veterans Afghanistan and Iraq military people coming in for PTSD and the response shocked me a bit. The answer was, “We really don’t expect any of the Afghanistan or Iraq vets to show up here for 20 or 30 years” He said it takes them that long to admit to themselves that they have problems and usually, by this time, things have degraded quite a bit. Alcohol, drugs, loss of marriage, loss of job, loss of home, criminal activities and other terrible things that might have been avoided had only this “failure to communicate” not been present.

PTSD is terrible, I admit, but it can be managed and the quicker that you and your spouse and loved ones admit to the problem the better. Long standing problems become so ingrained that they are next to impossible to correct. This is the easiest first step. All you need to do is start to write. Write about everything that seems different. Write of your feelings even though the words may seem difficult at first. The more you write the easier it will become. Airing your feelings exposes them to the light of day and this is an important part of your healing. Posting is still free. You can post as often as you want and we are open all day, every day.
