It’s Ironic- PTSD Insight

July 4, 2013

Its ironic, to me, that we celebrate our Independence on the 4th of July with fireworks and noises. Those who have returned from fighting for our Country and are now suffering with PTSD could easily have one of the triggers that set off many unpleasant thoughts be fireworks and noise.  “Bombs bursting in air” the words of our National Anthem stirs such terrible memories that have imprinted themselves in an everlasting recounting of the years of service and continued suffering that are anything but wanting to be celebrated.

For all those who would rather avoid this celebration, like myself with PTSD, please know that I understand and hope that you can find a place that is quiet and safe rather then hearing the noises of the fireworks and the the “Oohs” and “Aahs” from the onlookers of the 4th of July celebration that seemed to accompany this raucous holiday.  Your service is appreciated and the noises will abate but your service is something to be proud of.

PTSD seems to surface at sometimes the strangest times. I salute you silently.
